Rabbinic lore honors Hillel’s zeal for learning despite abject his poverty as a younger man. The tale about Hillel risking frostbite in order to learn at the Bet Midrash is taught as one of the most inspiring illustrations of Torah study. However, upon closer examination was Hillel truly noble or did he risk harm not only to himself but to his family? Does Hillel deserve our praise or our criticism?
